A 30-year-old woman, Beatrice Isaac, who allegedly stole a bag
containing valuables worth N350,000 at a Lagos market, was on Tuesday
brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court. The accused, whose address
is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.
She, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her. The
prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, told the court that the accused, on Aug.
24, at about 4:00p.m. at Balogun Street, Lagos, conspired with one
other at large to steal.
He said that the accused posed as a customer in a shop at Balogun Market
and stole one Fatimoh Iyanda’s bag. “Iyanda, who came to the market to
buy hair extension, left her bag containing her international passport,
phone and cash, all valued at N 350, 000, on a chair in the shop.
“The accused and her accomplice had left the shop before Iyanda noticed
that her bag was gone, but they were captured on Closed Circuit
Television camera. “The accused was later apprehended in the market,” he
said. Ekundayo said that the offence contravened Sections 285 and 409
of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 285 prescribes three
years imprisonment for a person found guilty, while 409 stipulates two
years imprisonment.
The Magistrate, Mr Ade Adefulire, granted the accused N100, 000 bail
with one surety in like sum. He adjourned the case till Oct. 3 for
